Wywran is a family of languages natively spoken by wyverns of Halqueme. Contrary to what some scholars believed in the past, these are true languages that have a grammar and a vocabulary that includes abstract concepts.
There are three major Wywran languages: Red Ridge Wywran, North Wywran, and Firespeech. Red Ridge Wywran and North Wywran are natural languages descended from Old Wywran. Firespeech is an artificial language derived from Red Ridge Wywran to ease communication between wyverns and humans.
Natural Wywran languages tend to have fairly simple grammar, without marked tenses or noun cases. Wywran phonotactics, on the other hand, is extremely difficult for humans.
All Wywran sounds can, in theory, be pronounced by a human vocal apparatus. However, humans who didn’t grow up speaking Wywran are generally unable to distinguish those sounds enough to be able to use them as distinct phonemes. Wyverns, for their part, are mostly capable of understanding a human language — but cannot pronounce half the sounds due to the way their mouths are shaped.
For that reason, when the humans of Halcia began working with wyrms closely, Firespeech was developed. It’s a simplified version of Red Ridge Wywran that both wyrms and humans can hear and pronounce with relative ease.
The wyverns that are raised by the Halcian Fire Farm are generally multilingual. They know both Firespeech (taught by the pilots) and the local Wywran dialect (taught by their parents), and they usually understand some Halcian as well, though they can’t speak it.
